Eight Reasons To Eat Organic Food

carrot tops, carrots, organic carrots, organic food,

Not only is  organic food perceived to be healthier for us, concern about animal welfare and negative environmental effects is a well targeted concern.

However, one of the main reason why many of us don’t eat organic is the higher cost, especially in these uncertain economic times.

Nevertheless, if you are interested in changing your diet to an organic one the following may give a little guidance.

Organic Is Healthy

Organic food generally contains higher levels of Vitamin C and essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium. It also contains cancer fighting antioxidants.

No additives

Organic food contains no food additives that can cause health problems such as heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity.

Hydrogenated fat, artificial sweetener and monosodium glutamate are amongst the banned additives that do not comply with organic food standards.

No added antibiotics

Antibiotics are prohibited due to the possible effects on human health.

Animal welfare

The care of animals is becoming more important as the public learns about the effects on food. Animal and poultry foods are  subject to banned additives and checks are in place to ensure a healthy environment – eg free range poultry and eggs.

No pesticides

Over 400 pesticdes are used in conventional farming methods, which can leave residues present in non organic food. Baby food, spinach, dried fruit, bread, apples, celery and chips have all been found to have high levels of residue.

GM free

Genetically modified foods do not comply with organic standards and guidelines.

Benefit to wildlife and the environment

The production of organic food causes lower pollution from sprays, produces less carbon dioxide and less dangerous wastes. A positive towards global warming concerns.

Organic Taste

Many top chefs choose to cook only with organic produce as many people claim that it simply tastes better.
